Who can sponsor family to canada?

You can sponsor certain family members to come to Canada if:

  • you are at least 18 years old and

  • you are either a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada

There are number of other specific requirements that the sponsor must meet.

Who can be sponsored ?

  • spouse/common-law partner

  • dependent child (including adopted children)

  • parents and grandparents

  • orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild (they must be single and under 18 years of age)

The sponsor must provide for the sponsored person’s basic needs during a certain period of time starting after the family member is granted permanent residence. This is known as “the sponsorship undertaking”. The length of the undertaking ranges from 3 to 20 years, depending on who is being sponsored.
